FAQ
If you have questions about acupuncture, I'll do my best to offer some some answers..
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the gentle placing of very fine disposable needles at various specific points on the body.
Why do Acupuncture?
According to Chinese medical theory, the aim of Acupuncture is to gently adjust the functioning of a person's energy system. It follows a complex and intricate system of diagnosis and treatment that allows us to understand the needs of each person and to treat them accordingly, whether the person is looking for help with ankle problem or a fertility problem, and everything in between.
What does it feel like?
Generally it feels like a tingling or a dull ache. After this people often describe a feeling of calm and relaxation, as the Acupuncture works on the person's system.
How does it work?
According to Traditional Chinese Medical theory, Acupuncture works by freeing up energy in the body that has become stuck or depleted, that is said to cause health problems. In conventional medical terms it is thought to cause the release of endorphins and seratonins via the nervous system.
What does it treat?
Given that we're affecting the body via the network of meridians or channels, in theory, any problem that lies within this network (i.e. the whole body), can be affected by our intervention using acupuncture. This is not to say, however, that it will instantly resolve anything, although that can happen. Often though it will take a little time, because we are adjusting the functioning of the system.
Are there any side effects?
No, there aren't side effects. It is a method that works in harmony with someone's system. Sometimes you might feel a bit sleepy or 'spaced out' after the session, as it can have a deeply relaxing effect that often we're not used to.
Can I have acupuncture if I am taking medication?
Yes, there's no problem. If the medication is related to the problem you are having Acupuncture for, any changes you wish to make in your medication will need to be discussed with your GP.
How much does it cost?
First sessions cost £40. This includes a consultation and treatment, and takes 1hour 30 minutes. Follow up sessions are as follows:
1 treatment per week is £40
2 treatments per week is £30 per treatement.
3 or more treatments per week is £25 per treatment.
I often recommend coming for 3 sessions per week to begin with, in order to progress more quickly with the problem that you are coming for. I like to make this more affordable for people.
Where do you put the needles?
I practice a form of Acupuncture known as the Balance Method. One of it's particularities is that it involves using mostly points between the knees and the toes, and the elbows and fingertips. This means that you can keep all you clothes on, as long as I can get to those areas. Sometimes I might do points higher up the arms or legs, but mostly I use points below the elbows and knees.
Do you re-use the needles?
No, they're all sterilised, single use, disposable needles.
Where did you train?
In London and Chengdu. (click here for more)
Is there anything further I can do to help myself while I'm being treated?
Yes, dietary and lifestyle suggestions are possible. This is something we can discuss.
How long does a treatment take?
First treatments are normally 1 hour 30 minutes. Follow up treatments are normally 1 hour.
