How can Acupuncture be useful during pregnancy?

September 15th, 2009

Acupuncture can be a valuable resource for women during pregnancy as well as before and after childbirth. This is because it is a gentle, safe and effective form of medicine, with at least 2500 years of experience behind it. This means that we can apply it in many different situations, without the risk of creating problems for the person receiving it. In the case of pregnancy this of course includes the baby.

So , how can it be useful during pregnancy?

Below are some common problems that can occur during pregnancy (in no particular order !):

Miscarriage, nausea and vomiting, heartburn, constipation, varicose veins, haemorrhoids, UTI’s, musculoskeletal conditions, fatigue and exhaustion, anaemia, insomnia, anxiety and depression, itching, sinusitis, pregnancy induced hypertension, oedema, small-for-date babies, breech and posterior presentation.

With all of these conditions it is often possible to help or to rectify using acupuncture. Acupuncture is quite unique in this way, as it can be effective in a wide range of conditions.

Please read further sections for various research studies done in some of these areas.

Acupuncture for migraine prevention.

June 5th, 2009

According to the Cochrane collaboration, a recent meta-analysis of 22 trials, involving a total of 4419 participants, states that there is now consistent evidence that having acupuncture can be effective in preventing migraine.

“Available studies suggest that acupuncture is at least as effective as, or possibly more effective than, prophylactic drug treatment, and has fewer adverse effects. Acupuncture should be considered a treatment option for patients willing to undergo this treatment.”

Acupuncture, conventional treatment and lower back pain.

May 16th, 2009

Articles in the national press and Radio (BBC Radio 2) recently, on May 12th ‘09, have been citing a study done comparing the benefit of Acupuncture versus conventional treatment for chronic lower back pain (3 to 12 months) of non-specific origin.

638 adults aged between 18 and 70 with no previous experience of acupuncture, were divided into 4 groups and monitored over the course of a year, in this randomised controlled trial. 3 groups were given some form of acupuncture and 1 was given conventional care, such as would be received by visiting your GP.

In brief, the authors of this study state that they found stimulating acupuncture points to treat pain of non-specific origin, in the lower back, was more effective than conventional treatment alone, although they were not able to describe how the forms of acupuncture worked.

Insomnia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, aches and pains, headaches, palpitations, genital and urinary problems are also common.
